Providing Care While Traveling

At PASCO, we know that caring for your loved ones doesn’t stop simply because you’re traveling. Thankfully, caregivers are able to provide services for their loved ones during family reunions, road trips, vacations, and beyond. This flexibility, which varies by waiver, allows caregivers to continue being paid for providing services, even when not in their usual setting.

Can I provide services while traveling?

Yes! However, depending on your loved one’s current Medicaid waiver or program, different rules may apply in order to provide services outside of your home or community. Below is a list of all of the programs PASCO services, as well as their qualifying instances for providing care while traveling.

Family Member as CNA

Where can you provide services?

These services can be provided within the temporary “home” setting while traveling. This would include hotels, residences of friends or family members, campgrounds, and more.

Caregivers must provide addresses of the areas that will be stayed in for the duration of each trip.

Who can provide services?

Any currently employed and in-compliance caregiver may complete the services they are approved for while traveling.

In-Home Support Services (IHSS)

Where can you provide services?

Anywhere! IHSS can be delivered while traveling. This includes tasks such as accompaniment (assistance checking into a flight, checking luggage, navigating TSA checkpoints), as well as any ADL (activities of daily living) assistance needed in between destinations such as eating, toileting, transfers, ambulation, etc.

IHSS provides the unique benefit of allowing care to be provided wherever it is needed and is not restricted to a home or specific community setting.

Pediatric Personal Care (PPC)

Where can you provide services?

These services can only be provided within the temporary “home” or lodging setting while traveling. This would include hotels, residences of friends or family members, AirBNBs, and more.

Who can provide these services?

PPCS caregivers can be a family member, friend, or another trusted individual that is not a parent or guardian of the client. These individuals must be current PASCO employees in order to provide services while traveling.

PPCS provides the unique benefit of having an extra set of hands while on vacation. Navigating airports, coordinating lodging, and other travel headaches can be stressful. Having extra assistance with your child with a disability, knowing they are with trained individuals who know your loved ones well, can be a huge help and provide peace of mind while traveling.

Intellectual or Developmental Disabilities (IDD)

Where can you provide services?

Anywhere!* IDD services can be delivered while traveling. This includes tasks such as accompaniment (assistance checking into a flight, checking luggage, navigating TSA checkpoints), and any ADL (activities of daily living) assistance needed between destinations such as eating, toileting, transfers, ambulation, etc.

*Community connector and supported community connections services must be done in the community/outside of the temporary residence, but may still be completed while traveling

Who can provide these services?

Any currently employed and in-compliance caregiver may complete the services they are approved for while traveling.

What do I need to do before traveling?

Contact our team

Please reach out to both support@pascohh.com and your PASCO Care Coordinator with the following:

      • dates you will be away from home
      • addresses of where you will be staying
      • the best phone number to reach you

If your loved one’s care requires in-person recertification or supervision with a nurse, check to make sure this is not scheduled to occur while you are away. If your scheduled date passes while you are out of town, we must place the client on hold until the nurse visit can take place upon return.

If you cannot complete your regular scheduled care and need to add additional PTO to your schedule while you are away, please reach out to support@pascohh.com to complete a vacation request.

What are the benefits of traveling while providing services?

When utilizing Home and Community-Based Services (HCBS) waivers, one of the key benefits is in the name! Traveling creates the opportunity to help expand your loved ones’ sense of community, all while continuing to provide the services you would while at home. Exploring new places, meeting new people, and creating new memories all contribute to the overall goal that HCBS waivers aim for – fostering independence. Having this flexibility to provide services, even while away from home, can benefit the entire family.
